Waste stream onboard a cruise vessel

Ship designer contacted us for a solution on the overall handling of waste stream onboard a cruise vessel. The environmental Eco-design called for a set-up without any conventional incinerator installed. Specific detailed information on the waste generation rates per pax, the shipboard flows and logistics as well as dedicated waste room space and treatment machinery were reviewed and proposed.

Vessel type: expedition cruise vessel 240 pax

Solution: In line with the expected period of isolation a detailed overview of the dry waste volumes per waste fraction and achievable volume reductions was presented after which waste processing and storage space was dedicated. A flow path to a central installed chute system for garbage streams was suggested. Both dry waste and glass are automatically fed to lower deck via a chute. In addition, for the mixed streams a sorting table was designed with direct filling of wheeled interchangeable containers which provides a crew friendly means for transport to and from high volume Waste Compactor and Baler. Food waste is processed directly at source such as galley scullery areas via a high-powered macerator and conveyed via a vacuum system to a food waste holding tank.
